How did the idea for the Eroica Montalcino Permanent Route come about? Who is involved in it?

The idea of the Permanent Route dates back to 2016 - explains Franco Rossi, vice-President of Eroica Ssd – and forms part of an agreement between Eroica Italia SSD and the Municipality of Montalcino. The aim of Mayor Silvio Franceschelli is to promote leisure cycling in the Brunello wine territory and the Val d'Orcia, with special attention to S. Giovanni D'Asso and Montisi. The project is supported by Patrizio Cencioni, president of the Consorzio del Vino Brunello and its Council.

What are the main characteristics of the route?

The Permanent Route puts the authentic white roads of the Siena province in the spotlight. The roads cut through the breathtaking scenery of vineyards and Mediterranean scrub and the open landscapes of Val d'Orcia and Crete Senesi. The route is 153 km long with an elevation gain of just over 3,000 m. It consists of 12 sections of asphalt road for a total of 82 km and 11 sections of white road, covering 71 km.

What kind of bicycle can be used on the route?

The best bike to use for comfort and safety on the white roads is a gravel bike. We believe that these bikes, together with e-bikes are the future of cycling tourism. During Eroica events, it is obligatory to ride a vintage bike that was built before 1987; with brake wires outside the handlebars, lever gears on the downtube and cage pedals.

How long does it take to complete the route?

The Eroica Montalcino Permanent Route could be completed in just a day by a fit rider but it can also be divided into stages covering a few days. We have divided the route into 13 stages that will be described on informative panels along the route and on an App that will be developed.

Is it best to cycle alone or as part of a group?

The route will have both Private and Public Points where it will be possible to park bikes, carry out repairs and recharge e-bikes. There will also be points offering water, showers, camping facilities, hotels, bars, restaurants and tastings of local products. To enjoy the Eroica Montalcino Permanent Route at its best, we advise riding with a group of friends, in pure Eroica style.

And so we have the Terra Eroica, an area that comprises both the Chianti and Brunello
