How an Eroica poster is born

The Nova Eroica 2019  poster was created by US illustrator Corey Brickley, together with 93ft, the English graphic design company that created many of the Eroica posters around the world: “This year we wanted to create a new and dynamic look for the NOVA event. We wanted to capture a sense of the riding pace of NOVA which is different to that of the Eroica Classic events. We were also interested to explore a new vibrancy through our use of colour as well as reflecting the technical nature of the bike, rider and their apparel. Using a limited colour palette with a bold use of colour and speed lines helps to achieve this. We also enjoyed working in a sense of the chalky dust which is kicked up as the riders power along Buonconvento's sun baked white roads.”

What technique was used? “Working with our selected illustrator, we first set the composition as a 3-dimensional model. Using a special technique known only to the illustrator - colour, gradients and detail were added to then realise the final illustration. The whole poster really comes alive once the type treatment of the NOVA branding, location and wording are set. Keeping to the strict colour palette for both the illustration and typography makes for a striking end result.”

NOVA Eroica is a Gravel GranFondo, more than a gravel, not merely a granfondo. With its Eroica-style food stops, the unique NOVA Eroica format is open to road, gravel and cyclocross bikes, with a formula that unites moments of intense competition with relaxed-pace sections in the company of fellow cyclists. NOVA Eroica is modern cycling, reinvented for a new generation of cyclists. This year Nova Eroica will take place in South Africa (16 March), California (6 April) and Buonconvento (28 April).
