A route that passes through the Crete Senesi, challenging but within the reach of many thanks to a length and a difference in altitude not excessive. For the 2024 edition it is exceptionally dedicated to the one hundred years of the radio.
Sunday 6 October 2024 will mark exactly ONE HUNDRED YEARS since the first RADIO broadcast in Italy. In fact, "U.R.I. Unione Radiofonica Italiana..." were the first words uttered, on 6 October 1924, by Maria Luisa Boncompagni who was broadcasting from Palazzo Corrodi in Rome.
The radio was immediately music but also a lot of sport, especially cycling. A lot of cycling. Who doesn't know, for example, the announcement made by Mario Ferretti "A single man is in command, his jersey is white and blue: his name is Fausto Coppi". It was 1949 and the Giro d'Italia was the Cuneo-Pinerolo race that Coppi won with an advantage of over 11 minutes over Gino Bartali. The third was Alfredo Martini, who reached the finish line with a delay of over twenty minutes.
Even three years earlier the radio reported in an original way Coppi's victory at the Milan - Sanremo that the champion won with an advantage of 14 minutes. Once the winner was announced, Nicolò Carosio said on the radio: “while waiting for the others, we’ll play dance music”. Fantastic.
The ONE HUNDRED YEARS OF RADIO journey was born from Eroica’s desire to pay homage to all those very strong emotions that RADIO RAI, today as 100 years ago, gives us all.
