Five miles north of the start line is the little town of San Simeon, California. Passing by, whether by car or bike, you are filled with a sense of wonder and a lust for wander.
Our 35-mile Sunday Classic ride steers north up the coast past Hearst Castle, a hilltop mansion built by William Randolph Hearst in the early 20th century. It is now a tourist attraction and National Historic Landmark. Don’t be surprised to see zebra, Tule elk and other exotic animals roaming the fields; it’s not an illusion. Seven miles north of San Simeon on Highway 1 is home to a large northern elephant seal rookery known as the Piedras Blancas rookery.
Arrive early or stay late, but visit San Simeon. It’s a wonder this stretch of road has not yet been designated one of the world’s natural wonders. It’s that beautiful.
San Simeon offers a diverse selection of hotels at different price points. All are just steps away from the rugged coastline and pristine beaches that make San Simeon special.
