The beauty of fatigue and the thrill of conquest

We're growing our NOVA event to include two days of riding and racing!

NOVA Route

NOVA is back - and it is bigger and better. This is a race for modern gravel bikes. And for 2022 it’s a race from start to finish. Complete the 175km route in the shortest time and get yourself back to the Montagu Country Hotel first to be celebrated as our NOVA champion. Start time 05:15 from De Bos.

Also, as part of your NOVA entry you get to enjoy the CLASSIC route on your gravel bike on Saturday.

Saturday’s choose-your-own-adventure route concept worked so well for 2021 that we are continuing it into 2022. Riders of the CLASSIC routes will be encouraged to spend a day out on their bikes with their friends, and loved ones. Grab breakfast, lunch and drinks along the route and enjoy the dramatic backdrop of the mountainous region. We will also be keeping the casual start for Saturday’s ride from 08:00 - 11:00, so you can choose to start when, and with whoever you want to. You will receive a detailed map marked with routes, picnic spots, view points and a secret swim spot or two. You can make your day as laid back, or as challenging as you want to. Start and finish is at De Bos.

So that means your NOVA ticket gives you two days of fantastic riding in the Klein Karoo.

A NOTE ON WHAT BIKES ARE ALLOWED AT EROICA SOUTH AFRICA:

NOVA route, Saturday and Sunday rides

Only gravel bikes with drop handlebars will be allowed on the route. No suspension forks will be allowed.

NO MOUNTAIN BIKES or MODERN CARBON / ALUMINIUM ROAD BIKES ALLOWED.

For those wanting to race NOVA and don’t have a suitable bike yet, you can find some excellent options in the Bike Hub’s Gravel classified section.

 HISTORY OF THE NOVA

L'Eroica has never just been about recreating the past. It was originally launched as a "junket" - a “freebie” - for those who had participated in the "Gino Bartali" Granfondo, and it has always proposed routes that are tough, never just a ‘walk in the park’ for the cameras. In 2007, on 9 October, we proposed the Monte Paschi Eroica, the pro version of our event. Since then white roads have been reintroduced into the top echelons of the cycling world, including stages races and the memorable Giro d'Italia 2010 Carrara-Montalcino, with two segments of the permanent route of L'Eroica.
