Here are the details of our Eroica South Africa 2022 routes:
Saturday 7 May - CLASSIC Route
Our choose-your-own-adventure route concept worked so well for 2021 that we are continuing it into 2022. Riders of the CLASSIC routes will be encouraged to spend a day out on their bikes with their friends, and loved ones. Grab breakfast, lunch and drinks along the route and enjoy the dramatic backdrop of the mountainous region. We will also be keeping the casual start for Saturday’s ride from 08:00 - 11:00, so you can choose to start when, and with whoever you want to. You will receive a detailed map marked with routes, picnic spots, view points and a secret swim spot or two. You can make your day as laid back, or as challenging as you want to. Choose to ride anything from 40 - 90km. Start and finish is at De Bos.
Sunday 8 May - HERO Route (Ticket includes Saturday's CLASSIC ride)
For 2022 we’re re-introducing and improving our long distance cycling route for the truly Eroici. Our new HERO ride will take place on Sunday 8 May, and will follow a spectacular 170km route into the Bloutoring region. Not for the faint-hearted. Ride start time 05:00 from De Bos. Finish and collect your special HERO lapel pin back at De Bos, and celebrate your achievement with an ice cold beer.
Sunday 8 May - NOVA Route (Ticket includes Saturday's ride on your gravel bike)
NOVA is back - and it is bigger and better. This is a race for modern gravel bikes. And for 2022 it’s a race from start to finish. Complete the 170km route in the shortest time and get yourself back to De Bos first to be celebrated as our NOVA champion. Start time 05:15 from De Bos.
A NOTE ON WHAT BIKES ARE ALLOWED AT EROICA SOUTH AFRICA:

If you’re entering the Eroica CLASSIC or HERO categories and you don’t have your equipment in order, fear not - our partners at everyone’s favourite South African cycling site, the Bike Hub, have created a special Vintage Bike category on their online marketplace. Here you’ll be able to find many fantastic options to get you rolling, and it could also help you find that missing part in the Vintage Components section.
For those wanting to race NOVA and don’t have a suitable bike yet, you can find some excellent options in the Bike Hub’s Gravel Bikes classified section.
L’Eroica started in 1997 because of one man, Giancarlo Brocci, who admired the values of a past cycling so much that he wanted to reconnect others to the heritage that inspired much Italian history, literature, culture, and music.
L’Eroica was also begun as a foundation for the protection and preservation of the last gravel roads in Tuscany. These romantic concepts led to the idea of L’Eroica, an event that initially saw 92 “hunters of feelings and emotions”, as the creator Giancarlo Brocci defines them.
“We want people to rediscover the beauty of fatigue and the taste of accomplishment”
Giancarlo Brocci, Creator of L'Eroica
